The Sultan of Brunei, the most ferocious absolute monarch on the planet, on the throne for more than half a century, forces anyone studying at the expense of the state not to leave the country for a long period of time after completing their university studies.
We should not do the same in our democratic republic with medical students! And with no one else.
We should not try to justify the lack of visionary policies in higher education and health and the inability to solve the big systemic problems in these areas with an anti-law, which contradicts not only the Law on Higher Education, in force since 2015, but also with the freedoms and universal human rights guaranteed by the constitution.
Make no mistake, you who have it in your hand to approve or reject a bill like the one that would force our young doctors to stay in the country.
Vote for much more to be invested in their modern vocational education, as you voted to double your and the ministers' salaries, creating for students much better opportunities and conditions than they have, better working conditions to practice the doctor's profession after graduating and specializing and decent salary.
So that they don't leave, as you fear and as many of us would not want. So that they serve us, the citizens of this country, not the Germans, Greeks and Italians, because they are our children, our sons and daughters.
Do not anger medical students, do not play with their rights, dignity and patience. Take them seriously. Students are the only layer of society that can fundamentally shake the political establishment, if the law that you, the elected representatives in the people's assembly, can approve, they feel or perceive it as a great injustice done to them.
Listen carefully! Take their needs and requests seriously! Don't rush with administrative orders and parliamentary procedures to close the mouth and perspective of our future doctors. A wrong decision today can have a boomerang effect.
