The umbrella, without real alternatives, becomes a distraction mechanism where media attention shifts to the speaker at the end of the umbrella rather than to SPAK, and the promised actions of the DP are eclipsed by the fruitless noise of the umbrella erected by a party with no more supporters.
In Albania, the tent has a function that goes beyond political spectacle, it is a space where the opposition can vent frustration, mobilize fanatical supporters and produce symbolic pressure on the government. But this collective venting and mobilization of fanatics around the tent are not sufficient to build an alternative government; they simply have symbolic force with a temporary effect.
This lesson comes from the political product provided through this mechanism by the SP in 2001, the DP in 2007, and these two cases are not enough, but another one is added, the recent one of Albania Is Being Made. Previous experience has shown that the umbrella as a means to attract media attention and to show that “something is happening”, has mostly fed the media with news, distracted public opinion from government decisions, and eclipsed the ability of other opposition parties to present a more attractive opposition alternative, having a temporary result that is not at all substantial.
The phenomenon of repeating mistakes by parties that publicly claim to be different from the old political establishment shows that they have not only the same mindset but also poverty in finding mechanisms to become competitive parties, imposing on the public an endless cycle of collective deflation without political results.
The umbrella, without real alternatives, becomes a distraction mechanism where media attention shifts to the speaker at the end of the umbrella rather than to SPAK, and the promised actions of the DP are eclipsed by the fruitless noise of the umbrella erected by a party with no more supporters.
Previous experience has shown that only the combination of symbolic actions with the construction of an alternative government, competent teams, credible leadership, and moral credibility can produce results and turn collective frustration into mobilization to overthrow the government.
In the end, the moral is simple, but philosophically important, the umbrella is not a bad tool, but its sole use, without real actions and strategies for building an alternative, turns into a cycle of failure, a repeated illusion and a "disappointment" for the public that sees only the spectacle, but not the strategy of how governance will be tomorrow. Only those who understand that symbolism must be alternated with concrete actions and capable leadership can use the umbrella as an instrument, and not as a stage that distracts attention and eclipses the actions of the major opposition parties.
