Last Saturday, at the same moment that Timo Flloko was reciting his love poems on the stage of the Ancient Theater of Butrint, the journalist Marin Mema broadcast an interview with the American archaeologist David Hernandez of the University of Cincinnati. In his show on Top Channel, Mema managed to get an impressive interview in Albanian, for all those who had the time and inclination to listen to it. With the importance of the title he holds, Prof. Hernandez, a Cuban American, threw a theory as interesting as it was recently talked about on the historical fate of Butrint.
According to Prof. Hernandez, who has been working in Butrint for some time under the umbrella of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic, in this ancient center there is no trace of the local populations known by the name of Kaons or Prasaibs. Hernandez with a complete certainty that gives him the long experience of excavations said that this ancient city was nothing more than a Greek colony where everything was Greek and came from the sea. Asked about the fate of the locals, Hernandes had a very impressive theory. Locals just came and went in droves in an all-Greek town.
I've known Hernandez for years. A Cuban immigrant who (now with an American passport) represents two very peripheral cultures in Mediterranean history to understand and feel the centuries-old call of the ancient populations of Epirus. I am not at all surprised by his current theories, also articulated in Albanian, similar to Gjeorgjevic of the past. He used to whisper these theories of Richard Hodges across the tables and was careful not to say them out loud.
Well, now things have changed. Under the blessing of the Albanian authorities, together with the Director of the Institute of Archeology and his spiritual teacher voted by the Albanian Parliament as the administrator of Butrint for 10 years, Prof. David Hernandez is no longer shy to talk about the People with Sheep, who according to him had nothing to do with the Ancient City of Butrint. After all, the descendants of these shepherds are today in the Parliament that voted for Hodgin. Who directed and wrote about the ancient history of the lands where the shepherds roasted some sheep and exchanged them with vases full of paintings produced by a superior Hellenic culture that had founded the city. In a moment of reflection, maybe Prof. Hernandez may be right, maybe the ether of Albanian archeology that followed Dr.
Wanting to follow the nationalist line, they sought an imaginary settlement for the former shepherds and placed them in the land of the Hellenes who came from the sea. Inspired by the ancient sources that spoke of Kaone, Prasaibe, Molose, Thesprote, etc., the Albanian School of Archeology probably lied by creating an imaginary connection with them, wanting the sheepish people to become more civilized, thus stirring the waters of nationalism Albanian. Yes, the old school is no more, the internationalist Hodgis Albanian students silently approve these theories, it is enough to dip their finger in the honey of the projects. In any case, I am guilty of speaking for a completely indifferent audience, concerned only with the characters of the telenovelas.
And with an argument strongly defended by a Cuban archaeologist like Dr. Hernadez or a British one like Hodges, they wake us up from the stupor of nationalist sleep by showing us a simple truth. We still continue to be People with Sheep. Just like the shepherds of the ancient world who were afraid of the culture within the walls of this city, who did not bathe in the public baths with mosaic floors, who could not enter the temples full of statues, even today we are afraid of this city that suddenly fell to us. We stay away from it, we don't love it, we are afraid of its culture, we look at it with disdain and for this reason we gave it to the people who came from the Sea. Therefore, Hernandez and others after him are right, we are the descendants of the People with Sheep.
