In fact, from a rigorous study (where I analyzed millions of American traffic accidents), I found that the probability of dying in a serious traffic accident is almost cut in half when wearing a seat belt.
From the technical examination made after the tragic road accident in Tepelena that happened on the weekend, it was found that the safety belt mechanisms in the seats where the 4 victims and the 2 seriously injured were sitting, were not activated during the fatal collision. This is a strong indication that those unfortunates had not fastened their seat belts before being involved in that serious accident.
Granted, the fatal results of that accident do not constitute statistical proof of the need for seat belts, but they tragically illustrate it.
In fact, from a rigorous study I conducted for the Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation (where I analyzed millions of American traffic accidents), I found that the probability of dying in a serious traffic accident is almost cut in half when wearing a seat belt. Furthermore, the probability of serious injury is reduced by 28%.
In other words, when you're wearing your seat belt and you're involved in a serious traffic accident, you can avoid the death that would have followed if you hadn't been wearing it. Or you can escape serious injury. So instead of going to the hospital morgue, you can go to the hospital ward. Or instead of going to the hospital, you can just go to the ambulance.
In the last decade, the Traffic Police has been very strict about the use of seat belts by drivers and passengers of vehicles. And perhaps out of fear of fines, the use of seat belts has also increased significantly. So in 2012, when I conducted a survey about this issue, I found that only 24% of Albanians regularly used the safety belt in vehicles. While last year, I got a full 75%.
However, every citizen should be made aware that wearing a seat belt in a vehicle should not be done just to save your wallet from a fine from the Traffic Police – your seat belt is likely to save your life too, if you are unfortunate enough to be involved in one. serious accident (probably not your fault).
Better to have your seat belt on and not need it, than to need it and not have it!!!
