Meta today is experiencing one of the darkest episodes of his career.
Ilir Meta could be teaching at the faculty today but, before finishing his studies in December 1990, he decided to enter the path of politics in order to reach, as rarely anyone in three decades, the peaks of his second profession with old in the world, politician, as minister, Prime Minister, Speaker of Parliament and President of the Republic.
Today, he was arrested on charges of money laundering, non-declaration of assets and corruption. His wife and political companion until a few months ago, is being investigated in a free state.
The prosecution will have to prove in court "what Meta has received", while history will also assess what he has given in these 30 years.
A self-made politician, Meta became the youngest Prime Minister of the transition, at the age of 29. Appreciated as a successful prime minister from 1999-2001, Meta very quickly targeted everything. He resigned after clashes with SP chairman Nano and rushed to create LSI in 2004. If he had experience of strategic patience, a year later he could have been the natural chairman of SP.
With the LSI, Meta managed to temporarily break the SP-PD dichotomy.
The strength he created made possible the rotation with 2005 and 2013.
The alliance with the SP in 2013 gave power to the LSI for the second time, after 4 years with the DP. The alliance with Rama is also the beginning of the end of LSI. When the party created by him could not play the role of "king maker", he remained "king".
Four years as Speaker of the Parliament and 5 years as President of the Republic were the peaks of Meta's personal power. From the height of the head of state, he faced two "impeachments" by the majority that elected him, but he also saw the collapse of the LSI, which he tried to renew, after the presidential mandate (2017-2022) by reformatting it as the Freedom Party.
"Power tires those who don't have it"! Then let those who have it! This maxim was tested with Meta and his party.
Accusations of corruption, years of confrontations with prosecutors, the paranoia that long power brings, for anyone, unchecked rhetoric, brought political, family and, recently, legal costs.
In court, Meta will face a five-year SPAK investigation for money laundering, non-declaration of assets and corruption.
Meta today is experiencing one of the darkest episodes of his career. Just as history will show what he has given to Albanian politics and the country, justice will show what he has taken from them. Now, Meta's next battle is with justice that could set the epilogue to a career filled with contradictions. In politics, he has proved the saying that he can die several times!
