SPAK did not enter the Municipality offices to arrest Erion Veliaj, but entered the electoral campaign together with Sali Berisha. He also opened it today with a lobbyist who has a price tag of 20 million dollars, to show that he "has never stolen in his life"...
Erion Veliaj was escorted to the prison premises in Tirana today, at the request of SPAK, after being charged with passive corruption and laundering of the proceeds of a criminal offense. Although they are not specified in the judge's summary decision, it is a story built like in the movies, with the activity of a cultural foundation, where all donors are involved, and the fact that a house in Qerret, in the name of Ajola Xoxa's parents, is suspected to belong to the Veliaj couple, since toys belonging to their son who lives with his grandmother were found there.
The arrest, which took place at the beginning of the electoral campaign, where Veliaj is leading the Tirana campaign, greatly adds to the political motivation of the arrest with imprisonment, although the case has not yet gone to court.
Veliaj, who was attacked for years by the opposition regarding the incinerators and what they called the 5D affair, seems not to have been found to be implicated anywhere, and a wealth investigation of the family circle was launched against him - a kind of witch hunt just to justify the police accusations against him.
Unlike other senior politicians, such as Sali Berisha or Ilir Meta, who are under investigation due to their responsibilities as high-ranking officials, Veliaj is going to prison without even going to court, not because of his responsibilities as an official, but without any investigative process in his family circle. The accusations launched on the basis of an anonymous whistleblower created an even more poisonous climate of diversion within the socialists, exactly according to the scripts that Berisha read every day in public.
This gives his process all the colors of a political lynching by SPAK officials, who, apparently, want to remove their political complexes from the attacks of Berisha and Meta, by providing political services to them.
The preliminary arrest of such a high-ranking official – three times elected mayor of the capital in office – for an investigation, not about his official responsibilities, is simply involvement in the electoral campaign of the special prosecution. Justice has all the time and its right to investigate and try the mayor of Tirana at liberty, if they suspect a conflict of interest of his wife's private work with the Municipality of Tirana. The arrest at the beginning of the electoral campaign is a disgusting political alignment.
And this is serious news for the fate of Justice Reform in Albania. Complicated, it seems, by political changes in the US, rumors of funding cuts and fears of a weakening of their political power, SPAK prosecutors are returning to their "tribal" origins of political servants, putting an end to the illusion of a new justice system based on evidence and not on political needs.
The investigation process against Erion Veliaj has been a long saga of personal and family intrigues, in some cases with methods similar to those of the past. The prosecutor in the case and the BKH agents in that process have intimidated artists and collaborators of the foundation with personal blackmail, even into their private lives, by digging through their phones and creating an illegal climate in the production of the facts they needed to illustrate an accusation they had previously written.
I hope that the judicial process will clarify the history of personal and family blackmail and serve to reject a standard of political investigation. This standard has highlighted their complexes towards Sali Berisha and others, pressures that seem to have worked.
Today, SPAK did not enter the Municipality offices to arrest Erion Veliaj, but entered the electoral campaign together with Sali Berisha. He also opened it today with a lobbyist who has a price tag of 20 million dollars, to show that he "has never stolen in his life."
However, when this campaign comes to an end, it is certain that the non-political justice that was fought for is already dead. So, as a political party, we had justice before, even more professional than this, but no one needed it except those who commanded it.
