Year 2005 upside down!
Saki Berisha

Berisha knows that he is no longer obeyed outside the small framework of his party, torn apart by strife and time.

There has been a successful electoral enterprise in Albanian politics in these 34 years, which even the opponents have not been able to refute. In the space of a year before the 2005 elections, PD and Sali Berisha managed to shape a sensational return to the pedestal of power, completely recycling from the dark shadow of 1997, when Berisha pointed the finger at the horror of usury and the atrocities that followed, when he moved alone accompanied by an escort in the main cities and was practically boycotted by all the main partner states.

Berisha built an electoral scheme that envisioned bringing out a generation of young people in the first row of opposition chairs, a successful trick that gave a new image to a deeply problematic politician, who in fact deserved disqualification and exit from politics, and no return to the post of prime minister.

But Berisha did even more than that. After Basha and the others "without a mustache", he also brought back to the PD those whom he had beaten on the streets, whom he had brutally expelled from the party or whom he had monstrously accused. This was the electoral miracle that brought back to power the man who, after the tragedy of 1997, in a normal republic should not have been allowed to even apply for the position of water supply director in a provincial city. Berisha then did everything he is doing today and was elected prime minister.

What happened in 2005 has often been seen within the DP as an eternal and renewable mortgage of electoral success, which could be used as a magic card up the sleeve whenever the DP was in trouble. The last 12 years are enough to understand how unique and unrepeatable the revival of 2005 was. Water never flows under the same bridges, says the proverb.

Today, the Doctor's Democratic Party has no shape even close to the party that regained power 20 years ago. Beyond the fact that Berisha is at the helm again, everything else seems turned upside down in the once great democratic party. On the right and in the center, a threatening group of new parties have risen up asking for votes and advertising mandates which are currently appearing in all public opinion polls. The fame of the great unifier is no longer working for Berisha.

On the other hand, old allies such as Shehi and Duka feel free to say that a new political course is needed, implying the departure of Berisha, while Alibeaj, Kulluri and a number of officials who were once close to Lulzim Basha promise a tough battle for votes in some districts. . Even a historical ally like Mediu continues to wander the courts, while the Chams have long aligned themselves with Rama. Only the sterile loyalty of Vangjel Dule remains.

Berisha knows that he is no longer obeyed outside the small framework of his party, torn apart by strife and time. Therefore, he has not made any serious move to build a coalition with the other opposition, which would be a kind of recycling after the new names that have appeared on the scene. New parties with calculators in hand see his presence as an opportunity to get a few more votes on the right and in the center, old friends have realized that you can't go far with him and he himself knows this better than all these taken together. He will not compete to return to power, but to keep what he has: the party that he stole from Basha with the court.

As if this were not enough, Berisha finds himself left alone before these elections, even with the de facto merger of what was once known as the party that held the majority of power. The Freedom Party today has neither the president who is in prison, nor the historical couple who founded it and gave it very serious numerical quotas in the past. A party with at least 100,000 electoral votes in the last two elections, today is practically facing nothing, and this is a dire situation for Berisha's DP since it is the only formal ally left.

This nebula of opposition political slogans, once an essential part of the electoral miracle of 2005, today seems scattered, out of control and to a good extent even a competitor and opponent for the DP. The devils are out of the bottle and there is no god to gather them under the authority and shadow of the Doctor. What was once considered historical, i.e. the return, today sounds just as imperative and irreversible in the opposite sense: i.e., leaving! Berisha has decided to live long in Albanian politics and this decision has consequences. Who lives long sees and lives even things that he would not like to see and live.

This is not just a problem of unlikely alliances. PD itself ended where expected. It was like a violent scene on January 8, when Berisha attacked the party's headquarters with his loyalists armed with sticks and stones. The doctor promised collegiality in the party and built absolute power - the only thing he knows how to do, he promised primaries and today even the headquarters guard mocks them, he promised to open the party and was surrounded by a handful of fanatical supporters, he promised to allow different voices and even checks the list of those who agree to dance to his songs on New Year's Eve.

Twenty years ago Sali Berisha was accused but not investigated. Because twenty years ago, no one had the courage to investigate or insist that the former president of '97 be investigated. Today we see him at an advanced age and appearing at the doors of justice, where he stubbornly refused to go for decades to testify, even after the murder of Azem Hajdar. A fundamental change with two decades ago, has brought the demystification and the fall of the inviolability of the most dominant political figure of the last 30 years. Now the Doctor is getting accusations from all sides, his children's properties are being investigated, Gërdeci has been reopened and January 21. A scorched earth that is taking the energies not only of the Berisha family, but of the entire DP placed at the disposal of its criminal agenda. The party and the president are thus stuck in a fatal dichotomy that is taking the building down even though they are inside. It's an upside down 2005!
