Besim Sherifi

Besim Sherifi, 52 years old, arrested in Tirana after being declared internationally wanted for the murder of three people in Skopje in 2007, turns out to have been living using a false identity for years.

It is learned that Sherifi bore the name Besnik Xhaka on his documents, an identity that is suspected to actually belong to a person from Kosovo, but which was used by the 52-year-old in forged documents with his photograph.

Albanian authorities have requested detailed information from Kosovo institutions to verify the identity in question. In the meantime, several documents with the same name have been seized, including a Kosovar driver's license and a residence permit issued by Albanian authorities, all with false identities.

The manner in which Sherifi was able to obtain a residence permit is also being investigated, as legal procedures require fingerprinting.

Under normal circumstances, his identity would have been revealed earlier, given that he was internationally wanted with a "Red Notice".

His tracking was made possible through Sherif's son, who had come to Albania to meet him about two months earlier. This fact raised the police's first suspicions that it was Besim Sherif and not the person with the identity Besnik Xhaka.

Initially, he was routinely escorted, without being informed that he was suspected of a possible arrest. After taking fingerprints, it was found that he matched Besim Sherif, who is internationally wanted for murder.
