The Special Court against Organized Crime and Corruption will decide on April 7 regarding the request of former Minister of Health, Ilir Beqaj, who has offered a financial guarantee of 20 thousand euros for the change of the security measure.
Beqaj has been in prison for 21 months, while SPAK has filed a series of charges against him, such as passive corruption, violation of equality in tenders, forgery of documents, fraud with consequences, fraud in collaboration, and concealment of assets.
Beqaj requested release from prison, claiming that there is no longer any possibility of influencing or destroying evidence against him, nor is there any possibility of escaping or evading justice.
" Since 04.07.2024, I have been in a coercive measure of "Arrest with imprisonment". While today I am before you based on the right granted to me by Article 260 of the Criminal Procedure Code, which stipulates that coercive and prohibitive measures are revoked immediately when it appears that the conditions and criteria for their implementation are missing, as well as when the security needs are mitigated or when the implemented measure no longer corresponds to the importance of the fact or the punishment that can be imposed, the court replaces the measure with another, lighter one ", said Beqaj before the GJKKO.
SPAK has requested time to review all of the defense's claims regarding Beqaj's latest request for release from the Criminal Court.
Meanwhile, the GJKKO has rejected the request of Ermal Kurtulaj, a businessman who is considered one of the associates of former Minister Beqaj, during the time the latter headed SASPAC, the institution established to manage foreign funds, mainly those of the EU. Kurtulaj requested a change in the security measure, claiming that he has health problems.
Kurtulaj has been in custody since July 4, 2024, while he was arrested by order of SPAK following investigations launched in connection with SASPAC.
