Two suspected Albanian nationals have been arrested by French police in Calais as they attempted to enter the United Kingdom hidden in the back of a lorry. According to investigative sources, one of them was carrying a firearm fitted with a silencer.

The British media outlet Daily Mail has published an article on the incident, citing sources from the investigation, according to which the intervention of the armed forces was carried out without incident and without injuries. Authorities suspect that the arrested may have links to criminal groups and intended to meet other people in the criminal world in Britain.

Boulogne's deputy prosecutor, Patrick Leleu, confirmed that three arrests had been made, including the truck driver. He said two investigations had been opened: one for possession of prohibited weapons and another against the driver for aiding illegal immigration.

The English Channel route continues to be one of the main corridors of illegal immigration to Britain, where Albanian citizens are often mentioned. Some of them present themselves as asylum seekers, although Albania is considered a safe country by British authorities.

The article also highlights that Albanian criminal groups have been involved in various activities in the United Kingdom, including theft, trafficking and smuggling. As an example, previous cases are cited, where Albanian nationals have admitted involvement in high-value robberies of luxury apartments.

Published data shows that the number of Albanians entering Britain via the Channel has fallen in recent years. From over 17,000 asylum applications in 2022, the figure has fallen to less than 3,000 by 2024, according to analysis by the Migration Observatory based on Home Office data.
