Greek police have arrested two young men in Athens, suspected of involvement in a criminal group involved in drug distribution and led by a prisoner.

The operation began after a routine check on April 14 in the Agios Panteleimonas area. Officers detained a 22-year-old foreigner and a 19-year-old Greek man, who they considered suspicious. During the check, police found 61 doses of cannabis weighing 89 grams, intended for sale, as well as 520 euros that are suspected to have come from illegal activity.

Investigators identified an Albanian citizen, imprisoned in Malandrino, as the leader of the activity. He is also implicated in the murder of lawyer Michalis Zafeiropoulos in October 2017.

The search of the 22-year-old's apartment led to the seizure of 92 grams of cannabis, two electronic scales, many nylon packages and cold weapons such as an iron fist and a folding knife.

The same criminal figure is also linked to an extortion case in Thessaloniki. On April 17, police arrested four people, including one in custody. According to the investigation, the group demanded 200,000 euros from a company administrator, threatening his life. After negotiations, the amount was reduced to 100,000 euros.

The authorities organized a controlled delivery of 50 thousand euros. At the moment of the exchange, police forces intervened and arrested three people, despite their resistance.

During the searches, police found a firearm with 11 rounds of ammunition, mobile phones and sums of money. Phones and an improvised cutting tool were also discovered in the prisoner's cell.

The arrested have a history of serious criminal offenses, including murder and attempted murder. Investigations are ongoing to fully document the network's activities.
