United States President Donald Trump declared that his administration will reimpose sanctions on Iran and that the US will take over guaranteeing security in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the most important sea routes for global oil trade.
In a post on social media, Trump said the Strait of Hormuz will remain open, with or without Iran, adding that the blockade will only target Iranian ships and customers.
Trump also announced that the United States would be known as the "Guardian of the Strait of Hormuz" and would apply a 20% tariff on all cargo transported through it, as compensation for the costs of securing and protecting shipping in the region.
“The Strait of Hormuz is OPEN and will remain OPEN, with or without Iran. We are reinstating the IRANIAN BLOCKADE, so called because it is only stopping Iran’s ships or customers from entering or leaving. All other countries will have fair and open use of the Strait. The United States, from this point forward, will be known as the “GUARDIAN OF THE STRAIT OF HORMuz,” but as such, and as a matter of FAIRNESS, will be reimbursed, at a rate of 20% on all cargo transported, for any costs necessary to carry out the job of providing security and protection in this very volatile part of the world. The process and training will begin immediately. Thank you for your attention to this matter!” Trump wrote.
