New blow to opposition in Russia, Putin's 'rival' banned
Boris Nadezhdin

Russian authorities have taken another action against the opposition, detaining politician Boris Nadezhdin, one of the figures who tried to challenge President Vladimir Putin in the 2024 presidential election.

The news was announced by Nadezhdin himself through his Telegram channel.

" They are sending me to the police station in Dolgoprudny ," he wrote.

According to Russian media outlet Msk1, which quotes lawyer Dmitry Trunin, Nadezhdin is accused of administrative offenses related to the display of extremist symbols.

The ban comes just days after the politician submitted documents to run in the State Duma elections, scheduled for September.

Last Friday, the Russian Ministry of Justice included Nadezhdin in the register of "foreign agents", accusing him of distributing materials published by persons and organizations declared "undesirable", of spreading "false information" about government decisions, as well as of inciting participation in unauthorized protests and rallies.

Under Russian legislation in effect since May 2024, people registered as "foreign agents" cannot run in elections. However, Nadezhdin had stated that being included on this list would not prevent him from continuing his campaign to run for the State Duma and collecting the necessary signatures.

In the 2024 presidential election, Nadezhdin ran with the support of the pacifist party "Civic Initiative". His team managed to collect over 100,000 supporting signatures, but the Central Election Commission refused to register his candidacy, arguing that a significant number of signatures were invalid.
