A serious incident occurred yesterday evening in the city of Zele in Belgium, where an Albanian citizen is suspected of shooting the owner of the restaurant where he was having dinner with his girlfriend.
According to Belgian media, the incident occurred at around 8:30 p.m. at the "Yega" restaurant in the city center. The couple had gone to dinner, but the situation between them deteriorated into a heated argument.
The restaurant owner, Mehmeti, 45, intervened to ask them to calm down, as there were other customers in the restaurant. He told the media that at that moment the customer pulled out a pistol and pointed it at him.
According to the owner, when he tried to call the police, the Albanian opened fire, wounding him in the neck. Mehmeti says that in an attempt to avoid further escalation, he tried to grab the gun, which led to a brief scuffle between them, before the perpetrator left the restaurant.
The injured man was immediately taken to the hospital for medical attention and then returned home. He and his family have expressed shock at the incident. According to them, the perpetrator had been a customer before, but had not caused any problems.
The restaurant owners also said that he did not appear drunk, as he had only ordered one soft drink during the evening.
The family's children were not in the restaurant at the time of the incident. The perpetrator fled the scene, taking the gun with him, while the restaurant's security cameras recorded footage that could help identify him.
Belgian police have confirmed the incident, but have not provided further details due to the ongoing investigation. The prosecution has been made aware of the case, while experts carried out another inspection of the restaurant premises this morning. Due to the investigation, the restaurant will remain closed until further notice.
"He took the gun with him afterwards. Fortunately, we have camera footage and the perpetrator is seen there. We hope he is arrested as soon as possible. We have no idea why there was a gun in our restaurant," said the restaurant owner.
