Victim Rexhep Ismaili

The 66-year-old was not directly involved in the conflict between the groups, but intervened to protect a young man who was inside his bar.

Rexhep Ismaili, the owner of a gas station and bar in the village of Gjashtë, Saranda, was killed on the evening of May 7 after a violent conflict that allegedly started over a kidnapping attempt.

According to sources, the 66-year-old was not directly involved in the conflict between the groups, but intervened to protect a young man who was inside his bar when at least 10 people entered the business premises with sharp objects.

Sources from the investigation indicate that the aggressors attempted to take hostage a person who was in the bar, while the conflict is suspected to be related to property motives. The identity of the person who was the target of the kidnapping is still unknown.

In an attempt to stop the escalation of the situation, Rexhep Ismaili addressed the perpetrators with the words: "the boy is in our house and you can't touch him here," but then the argument escalated to the use of firearms.

According to preliminary information, it is suspected that Lulzim Tabaku was the first to pull out his gun and shoot the 66-year-old, who was also the president of the “Çamëria” Association in Saranda. After the first shots, another person who was near the counter opened fire.

Another person was injured during the exchange of fire, but did not show up at the hospital for medical attention. After the incident, the suspected perpetrator, Lulzim Tabaku, fled the scene with the injured person and is currently being sought by the police.

A vehicle suspected to belong to the perpetrators was also left at the scene.

Saranda Police have seized the security cameras of the business and the surrounding area, in order to fully uncover the dynamics of the event and identify other people involved in the conflict.

Meanwhile, checks are being carried out at regional hospitals and private clinics to identify the injured person. Investigators do not rule out the possibility that the perpetrators may have left Saranda, as the village of Gjashtë is located near the city's exit.
