A 45-year-old Albanian captain has been arrested by port authorities in Corfu after the ferry he was driving was found to have more passengers on board than its permitted capacity.
According to Greek media, the ferry, which sailed under the flag of Saint Kitts and Nevis, had arrived in the port of Corfu from a port in Albania. During the inspection carried out after docking, officers of the Central Port Authority found that there were more passengers on board than provided for in the vessel's navigation certificate.
After verifications, the 45-year-old was arrested on suspicion of violating Greek maritime legislation, including provisions related to the transport of passengers above the permitted limit and the rules for their registration, control and evidence.
The Central Port Authority of Corfu has launched investigations to fully clarify the circumstances of the case, while in parallel, the procedure for imposing administrative measures provided for by law has been set in motion.
