A magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck off the western coast of Mexico on Friday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
According to preliminary data, the seismic tremor had a focal depth of about 10 kilometers, while the epicenter was located at sea, about 71 kilometers southwest of Puerto Madero, in the state of Chiapas. The earthquake was also strongly felt in neighboring Guatemala.
Authorities issued a tsunami warning after the quake. There have been no official reports of casualties or major damage so far.
Mexico is located in one of the most seismically active zones in the world, along the so-called Pacific "Ring of Fire", where several tectonic plates collide.
