The Hungarian government has launched an investigation into former Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto's ties to Russia, Prime Minister Peter Magyar confirmed, without providing further details on the matter, the Hungarian Conservative newspaper reported.
At a press conference held on Thursday, Magyar said the investigation includes classified Foreign Ministry documents, as well as other official documents.
"There are classified documents, there are Foreign Ministry documents and other types of documents. When we have something to make public, we will do so," he declared.
The Prime Minister added that he does not want to "prejudge the matter" and did not provide any further information on the progress of the investigation.
According to the Hungarian Conservative, the announcement follows media reports published earlier this year, which alleged that Szijjarto had shared information with Russian officials while leading Hungarian diplomacy.
For his part, Szijjarto has previously denied these allegations, calling them in part "fake news." He has argued that maintaining contacts with Russian, American, Turkish and Israeli counterparts was part of normal diplomatic practice.
The announcement of the investigation came just two days after Szijjarto announced he was leaving parliament to join Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD, where he will hold an international executive position.
