A Europol team has landed in Tirana, while the focus has been on the fight against organized crime and the property investigation.
According to official information, the Europol delegation consists of the Department/Centre for Organized and Serious Crime at EUROPOL (SOCC), headed by Jean Yves Goriou, Head of the Organized Crime Unit, accompanied by Roberto Garbini, Deputy Head of the High-Risk Criminal Organizations Team in the Organized Crime Unit.
At the meeting held with State Police leaders, discussions focused on common priorities, as well as the implementation of the new Albanian Police strategy against organized crime, the development of proactive intelligence-based investigations, and the exchange of information with EUROPOL and EU member states.
Also, mapping and cracking down on high-profile criminal organizations with international connections, including structures in the priorities and operational plans of EMPACT 2026–2027, as well as strengthening cooperation in the fight against environmental crime, drug trafficking, human trafficking and the illegal movement of migrants, were other issues discussed.
Also, during the meeting, the coordination of parallel investigations, the development of property investigations, as well as the technical and operational support that will continue to be provided by EUROPOL for concrete proceedings that are being pursued, were discussed.
The visit of Europol officials to Tirana comes at a time when Albanian criminal organizations are considered quite dangerous, especially for drug trafficking, but also for their way of organizing.
Despite several operations by SPAK and BKH, with the help or cooperation of international partners, it has resulted that there has been a leak of information, which has allowed those considered leaders of organizations or people with influence in criminal networks to escape arrest.
