"With high social risk". This is how the Albanian police described yesterday a dangerous fugitive from his country who was handcuffed yesterday by the National Police in Alicante. The image of the detainee in Alicante, published in some Albanian media, is rather that of a tourist who has chosen the Costa Blanca as a holiday destination and not of a former leader of a criminal gang, sentenced to life imprisonment for dozens of murders carried out by his organization in Albania.
Lulzim Berisha, 52, was found and arrested in Playa de San Juan in an operation carried out by agents of the Fugitive Tracing Group who could be hiding in Alicante, where he was apparently using Bulgarian documents to avoid detection. The fugitive was caught after the Albanian police notified the Spanish police.
After the arrest, the suspect was transferred to Madrid and will be brought before the Central Investigative Court today. The fugitive will be assisted in his appearance in court by the law offices of Francisco Miguel Galiana Botella and José Manuel Alamán Aragonés. Revoking the life sentence
According to numerous Albanian media, Lulzimi was the leader of a criminal gang in the Albanian city of Durrës and was tried and convicted along with other members of the organization for half a dozen murders. He was arrested in April 2006 in Macedonia and in 2016 was able to leave prison on parole for health reasons without serving the 25-year sentence imposed after the Albanian Supreme Court overturned the original life sentence.
After his release, evidence emerged linking him to other crimes, and he was ordered first arrested and then jailed, according to media reports. However, he fled the country and his whereabouts were unknown until his arrest in Alicante.
