A drug trafficking organization with Albanian members has been dismantled by Spanish police. It involved a group of Albanians and Spaniards who trafficked 200 kilograms of cocaine in the port of Vigo in Spain.
The operation has led to the arrest of 8 members of the organization, as investigations continue. The arrested are 3 citizens of Albanian origin, three natives of Galicia, a Frenchman and a Latvian. The latter is believed to have been the head of the organization, who was wanted for drug links.
The head of the organization is Alexei Pustovarov, Charrington's lieutenant, known as the "drug lord of Wikipedia." The Albanians are suspected of operating as a separate cell, but collaborating with the Latvian boss.
This police operation dismantled the organization after a “very complex” 17-month investigation conducted by the National Police and the Customs Supervision Service.
Emilio Rodríguez, head of the GRECO Galicia unit, explained that the police had targeted several locals from Galicia and that through them, they reached the rest of the organization. These individuals were known to investigators and had contacted the Albanian group, offering them their operational skills.
The investigation uncovered the drug shipment by sea, hidden in a container using the “blind hook” method, which transported leather and fruit from Ecuador to Vigo. Members of the organization traveled to Vigo, where they stayed in hotels and an apartment, and received the drugs.
Three were caught in a restaurant in Vigo and two in the rented apartment. A search of the apartment revealed 200 kilograms of cocaine, packed in approximately one-kilogram packages bearing the 'Kia' logo. In addition to the five foreign nationals arrested, who were remanded in custody by court order, three Spaniards from A Coruña, Lugo and the Arousa area were arrested a week later.
Latvian Aleksei Pustovarov, a lieutenant of notorious drug trafficker Brian Colin Charrington (who died last July), was the head of the organization and was wanted by police.
"With this operation, this group, a 'highly structured and professional organization', has been dismantled. It controlled not only the production of the drug at its source, but also its subsequent transportation and distribution (for which they had the support of the Galician suspects). Furthermore, Emilio Rodríguez explained that this was the first drug shipment carried out by this specific organization," informs the Spanish media.
In addition to the 200 kilograms of cocaine and the arrests, police seized more than 20,000 euros, documents and mobile phones. In fact, the investigation remains open and further arrests are not ruled out, according to the head of the Vigo Drugs and Organized Crime Unit (UDYCO), Iago García.
The Deputy Delegate of the Government in Pontevedra, Abel Losada, congratulated the police forces and the SVA for this operation and highlighted “their ability to be present in the entire drug trafficking chain,” from large shipments to the smallest street distribution to the smallest drug den. In fact, he added, 25 drug dens were destroyed in Vigo last year.
Losada also asked "political and social actors, etc." to "let the police do their job in the fight against drug trafficking," because "they are the ones who know, the ones who have the resources."
