An Albanian, considered by Greek authorities as a high-risk person, has been arrested during a police operation in the Thermos area, in the Aitoloakarnania region.
According to police, he was one of the people involved in the 2019 escape from the Migration Service in Athens. In that incident, he, along with three other people, threatened officers with sharp objects and improvised weapons, took control of a police vehicle and fired at law enforcement officers, without causing any casualties.
After his subsequent arrest in the Rentisi area, he was convicted and imprisoned, but during a leave of absence he resumed criminal activity.
Most recently, in collaboration with two men and a woman, he allegedly attempted to commit a robbery in Thermo. According to the investigation, the group had set up a barricade near the victim's apartment and attacked him, but the attempt failed after the victim called for help, alerting residents.
While leaving the scene, the perpetrators fired automatic weapons into the air and fled. After investigation, police were able to identify the vehicle used and the Airbnb apartment where they were staying, leading to the arrest of all suspects.
Among the detainees were two other Albanians, who escaped from the Kassavetia Rural Detention Center in early January 2025.
During the search of the apartment, authorities seized a Kalashnikov-type automatic weapon with two attached magazines, containing a total of 57 7.62 mm caliber cartridges.
Investigations continue to fully uncover the group's activities and verify possible links to other criminal events.
