"Albanian criminals are playing us for fools", this is how the former head of the extreme UKIP party in Great Britain, one of the politicians who pushed the country towards "Brexit" with his campaigns, declared.
Nigel Farage has attacked the immigration system in the United Kingdom, shortly after footage emerged of a suspected thief, an Albanian immigrant, driving a luxury Ferrari in London.
"They're making fools of us, aren't they?!", said Farage speaking on "GB News".
According to the published video and photo, the former head of UKIP was referring to the Albanian Dorian Puka, a 28-year-old convicted thief who has been deported twice from Britain, but has managed to re-enter the UK under unknown circumstances.
Farage criticized the inability to deport Puka, also because of a pending asylum claim. Puka, who has been jailed and deported twice for residential burglaries, recently posted a 90-second video on social media of himself driving a Ferrari that British media say is worth at least £300,000 (over £500,000). thousand euros).
"So, we have an Albanian criminal, he is deported from the United Kingdom, returns illegally, leaves a Lithuanian girl pregnant, and now we cannot deport him, because Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights implies that he he has the right to have a family, therefore, he can stay.
We also have another Albanian, who has been deported twice, and now drives around the streets of London in a Ferrari. And we cannot get rid of him until his asylum request is processed. We are practically being trampled on by foreign criminals and we are too useless and too powerless to do anything about it", said Farage.
The Home Office has admitted that it is powerless to remove Puka again until his asylum claim is fully heard.
The case has reignited debate over UK immigration policies, with some Tory MPs calling for reforms to the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR).
Puka's criminal history in Great Britain dates back to 2016, when he was jailed for nine months for attempted burglary. After being expelled, he returned within a year and committed more burglaries in London.
He was caught, sentenced to three and a half years and deported again in March 2020. Undeterred, Puka re-entered Britain in December 2020, traveling through several European countries. He is currently on immigration bail with an electronic tag while awaiting a court decision on his asylum claim.
Puka's social media accounts show a luxurious lifestyle. In addition to the Ferrari video, he has posted images of other luxury cars, including a Porsche Cayenne and a Bentley Bentayga.
Albanian reports suggest that Puka is staying in a £250,000 two-storey flat in Hounslow, west London. The source of his apparent wealth remains unknown.
A Home Office spokesman said all criminals would be brought to justice.
"Foreign nationals who commit crimes should have no doubt that the law will be enforced."
The spokesman added that 3,000 individuals without the right to remain in the UK have returned since the new government took office.
The case follows another recent incident involving an Albanian criminal who won the right to remain in the UK under ECtHR rules, prompting calls from Tory MPs to reform or leave the convention.
