The trial of Laert Haxhiu's group continued this Tuesday at the Special Court Against Corruption and Organized Crime, where the credibility of the justice collaborator, Artan Tafani, was widely debated.
During the hearing, lawyer Aldo Duro asked the jury to have Tafani undergo a psychological evaluation, raising doubts about his mental state and ability to provide credible testimony.
" Once again, I repeat my request for a psychological evaluation for the justice collaborator Artan Tafani. He has not only been a drug user, such as cocaine and heroin, but also continues to be treated with methadone, a substance that is equally addictive ," declared Duro.
The defendants contested Tafani's testimony, denying any connection with Laert Haxhiu and the events for which they are accused. Erisiano Abedini stated that he has never met Haxhiu and that he has neither friendly nor professional relations with him.
" I am neither friend nor enemy with these people, nothing. I am not connected by profession or friendship with Laert Haxhiu. I have another profession and another friendship. Please appreciate this a little ," he said.
While Bujar Abedini emphasized that his only request is justice: " I don't even want mercy, nothing, I just want justice ."
On the other hand, Aldo Shkëmbi requested that the defense be familiar with all procedural acts, explaining that they have no interest in materials related to persons outside the scope of this trial.
The prosecutor in the case, Behar Dibra, opposed the defense's requests, explaining that there is another parallel investigation and that the requested acts are not related to the current process. According to him, the request was unfounded in law and of no interest to the case under consideration.
During his testimony, Artan Tafani provided gruesome details regarding the murder of Fridman Xhaferri, describing the victim's final moments and how his body was thrown into the water. He stated that Xhaferri was still alive when he first entered the water and that he died later, after being tied to rocks.
Tafan addressed the defendants directly, saying: “ Your friend has taken me by the throat, Laertes .”
After deliberations in the deliberation room, the trial panel decided to accept the defendants' request to challenge the testimony of Artan Tafani given during this trial, in relation to his statements in the preliminary phase. The court decided that all relevant minutes will become part of the court file and will be evaluated to examine the credibility of the collaborator of justice.
The process is expected to continue with further examination of evidence and testimony in future sessions.
