A serious incident has been recorded in the village of Karkavec, in the Qukës Administrative Unit of the Prrenjas municipality, where a 69-year-old man has been arrested after allegedly attempting to burn his 67-year-old wife with gasoline.
According to preliminary information, the elderly man, who was suspected of being under the influence of alcohol, initially exercised physical and psychological violence against his wife, Minushe Danga. He then forcibly took her mobile phone and, during the escalation of the conflict, is suspected of dousing it with gasoline and setting it on fire.
Preliminary sources suggest that jealousy may be behind the incident, however the full circumstances and motives are still under investigation by the authorities.
The incident occurred on Monday afternoon in the apartment of the couple, who lived alone, as their son is an immigrant in Greece. According to preliminary data, the woman had long been a victim of domestic violence and had been in possession of a protection order for the past three months.
After the incident, the 67-year-old was initially transported to the Elbasan Regional Hospital to receive first aid and then sent to the burns ward in Tirana for specialized treatment. Hospital sources indicate that her life is out of danger.
The police intervened after neighbors notified them and arrested the suspected perpetrator, while the investigation team continues to work to fully clarify the circumstances of the incident, which has shocked residents of the area. At the conclusion of the preliminary investigation, authorities are expected to determine the charges that will be filed against the 69-year-old.
