A gang of Albanian 'hawkers' involved in residential burglaries has been cracked down on by Italian police, after it had become a serious concern for residents in the areas of Bergamo, Pordenone, Venice and Udine.
At least four people have been arrested, all Albanians, and court proceedings against them are ongoing.
The preliminary investigation judge, Francesca Vortali, highlighted the "criminal propensity" of the suspects, considering the requests for security measures presented by the deputy prosecutor Monica Carraturo. The measures were justified by the risk of escape and repetition of criminal offenses.
"For the four Albanians under investigation for residential burglaries and for various reasons, for receiving stolen goods, recycling license plates and resisting a carabinieri checkpoint, the focus was on their proximity to several prominent criminal circles, as well as their lack of employment. In short, they support themselves through fraudulent activities," the authorities said.

The focus of the investigation is also Aldi Gjetani, for whom the Pordenone court has imposed double security measures. In addition to the latest measure, a previous decision for house arrest for therapeutic purposes, related to four thefts in Chions and Azzano Decimo, remains in force.
He was previously questioned as part of Operation AMG, according to his lawyer Alberto Settesoldi.
“He exercised his right to remain silent.” The lawyer adds that his client is only accused of one episode in this investigation.
Gjetani was identified by the Carabinieri in Latisana through a fingerprint left on a motorway toll booth. After a sentence in Udine, he had reached a plea agreement extended to five years. The decision of the court in Pordenone also provides for his deportation after the end of his sentence.
He was wanted and was randomly arrested in a hospital in Lombardy after being involved in a road accident, while two arrest warrants had been issued against him.

Meanwhile, Silvano Marku, represented by lawyer Cristian Bentivegna, has been remanded in custody. He is currently in Lodi prison for other thefts. His lawyer stated: “The questions asked were very detailed. The interrogation lasted more than an hour, but after two years he was unable to provide any information. His memories are not clear.” He admitted to having been in Friuli, but without giving details.
Two of the suspects turn out to be part of a gang arrested in Lombardy in December 2024. They were armed during the robberies and, according to wiretaps, expressed fear of the reaction of residents in the areas where they operated.
"What can I do to ten people with my bare hands? They'll destroy you. Four of us can crush them with crowbars. I had a gun tonight, because I usually carry one. I swear on my sister, you can't come out here without a gun," one of the suspects said in a phone conversation.
In total, the gang is suspected of 71 thefts in northeastern Italy, with an estimated damage of around 181,000 euros. Authorities have also documented the use of cocaine by some members of the group as a way to cope with the risk during criminal activities.
