Albania burns from fires, 46 arsonists arrested; 91 people under investigation

The fires of recent days that have brought Albania to its knees, causing colossal damage to agriculture, livestock, housing and even 1 death, turn out to be intentional in most cases.

The State Police reports that in the span of about 3 months, from June to today (August 14), 137 arsonists have been identified. Of these, 46 have been arrested and 91 are under investigation at large.

Several arsonists have also been identified through aerial monitoring via drone, who have been caught red-handed starting fires.

Meanwhile, police officers are simultaneously engaged with civil emergency groups and firefighters on the ground to help extinguish active fire outbreaks.

"State Police structures throughout the country, throughout the months of June, July and until today, have been maximally committed to identifying, capturing and arresting the perpetrators of arson.

From June to August 14, Police structures have identified 137 arsonists, of whom 46 have been arrested, while 91 have been criminally prosecuted.

Meanwhile, the National Security Forces, the "Eagle" Special Forces, the General Patrols and the Operational Forces, under the direction of the heads of the regions and the General Directorate of the State Police, continue to be on the ground, assisting in the evacuation of residents and supporting Civil Emergencies and firefighters to extinguish the flames.

The operational structures of the State Police are controlling and monitoring the areas with drones, to identify in time the people who cause fires, burning private property, homes, forests, pastures and, in many cases, seriously endangering the lives of residents, Police employees, firefighters and Civil Emergencies.

The State Police appeals to all residents not to cause fires. Livestock keepers and farmers are responsible for the lands and pastures they own or use.

Call to all residents: do not light fires to burn agricultural waste or to clean up the territory, without notifying and taking measures with the responsible authorities.

"Causing a fire, intentionally or through negligence, is a criminal offense and the State Police is working, in collaboration with residents, to identify, capture and arrest all those who cause fires," the police announced.
