How the DNA of the hat found in the stolen car brought the end of the Albanian

Today, Belgian authorities made it possible to break up a criminal group of Albanians who trafficked significant amounts of cocaine from Latin America to Belgium.

In Belgium, some of the members of the criminal group, 6 of them, were under investigation from 2022 for arms trafficking led by a 51-year-old Albanian, but the file was completed with the data sent there by the Albanian authorities about cocaine trafficking that was made by sea to the port of Antwerp.

From the investigations, it appears that the Albanians were careful in their communications and the meeting base for drug trafficking was a cafe in Antwerp, while the main leader of the group is a 55-year-old Albanian.

But how were the groups discovered?

The DNA found in a hat forgotten on board an Alfa Romeo Giulietta" has led to the discovery of one of the gangs of Albanians involved in the theft in via San Donà di Piave. After one of the thefts, they crashed the police car and then two other cars.

Gabriel Vata, 30, was handcuffed following an arrest warrant signed by investigating judge Monica Biasutti at the request of prosecutor Marco Faion. On the evening of December 2, he managed to escape together with other collaborators, while his compatriot Segi Gega, 26 years old, was arrested red-handed.

At 1 o'clock in the morning on December 3 in Viale Grigoletti, two members of the gang were caught by the police car with a stolen "Opel Agila" car. They didn't stop and hit a wall. After that, they ran away and then stole a "Mustang" from an American citizen, which was later found in Segrate.

The police managed to identify, through a detailed investigation, all the members of the criminal association, with Albanian nationality and no residence.

Investigators reconstructed that the gang was dedicated to committing house burglaries in north-central Italy. To avoid detection, they used telephone SIM cards registered to non-existent people, communicated with walkie-talkies during the thefts, did not connect mobile phones and used aliases or provided other personal information to the control.

Police investigations started from a SIM card, found in Gega's pockets, to trace the phone numbers used by the gang.

One of the suspects, who met them between Vicenza and Milan, was checked in Malpensa, where he was boarding. Computer analysis of his cellphone allowed the collection of further evidence.

Message exchanges appeared in which the perpetrators commented on the attacks carried out or identified new targets to hit or where to "flatten", which in Albanian slang means to raid.

The group traveled frequently to Barcelona, Spain. To return to their homeland, they did not use direct flights, but first arrived in Spain or Hungary, thus entering the Schengen area and from there they arrived in Albania.

It was in Barcelona that Zef Bane was caught last October, with a European arrest warrant, following his wife from the airport to the meeting place. Zefi had forgotten a bag with an identity document in the "Opel Agila", which, however, had a different last name. The police requested the cooperation of the international police cooperation service to find his identity.

Two hats, gloves and other items were found on board the Alfa Romeo Giulietta. Forensic medicine found the genetic profiles. However, one comparison was missing: the authors were not actually photographed.

The opportunity appeared when on November 30 of last year in Villaverla, Vata was arrested by the carabinieri of Valdagno for resisting a public official. While they were identifying the people traveling in a car, reported in connection with residential burglaries, he tried to hit the police several times with a screwdriver.

Prosecutor Faion delegated the Milan forensics team to extrapolate Vata's genetic profile, a result compatible with the DNA found on the hat. At that moment investigating judge Biasutti issued the order, dividing the evidence gathered against the suspect.

Yesterday, Vata, which appointed the lawyer Stefania Pattarello as a trusted representative, exercised the right not to answer the guarantee question. Defense reserves the right to evaluate a request for reconsideration.
