Tirana has become an oasis of fraudulent call centers, which through sophisticated schemes have managed to extort millions of euros from citizens of European Union countries. A recent international operation has highlighted the scale of this phenomenon and suspicions of involvement of law enforcement officials.
As part of an action initiated by the French authorities, in cooperation with SPAK, an agent of the State Police has been detained. Media sources report that this is Argusto Berberi, assigned to Police Station No. 1 in Tirana.
Agents of the National Bureau of Investigation have also conducted searches in his apartment, in the area near "Sami Frashëri" in the capital, where sums of money and other material evidence important for the investigation have been seized.
According to sources, there are suspicions that other State Police officers may be involved in this network, while investigations continue to fully uncover the scheme and those responsible.
This is not an isolated case. Just a few days ago, as part of Operation Ghost Call, in cooperation with Austrian authorities, another fraudulent scheme was uncovered that is suspected of having extorted over 50 million euros from foreign citizens.
Meanwhile, similar operations have been carried out previously in cooperation with German, Italian and Spanish authorities, reinforcing the perception that Albania, and especially Tirana, is becoming an important center of these criminal activities.
