Less than 40 euros was paid by Leonard Mnela, the underworld figure who for 21 years defrauded Albania and Italy. He forged a death certificate in 2003, after serving a life sentence in Italy. For many years he would disappear without a trace, until he would be arrested in America and extradited to Albania.
Until 2011, this citizen was wanted internationally by the Italian state, the justice across the Adriatic has sentenced Leonard Mnela to 25 years in prison. As Menla started a new life in Albania or somewhere else on 15.12.2010, he implements a plan worthy of "Hollywood" movies.
In the document of the court's decision obtained by the show FactCheck, Mnela from Shkodra presents seven years after his "death" in Latin America, the request for the formalization of this act also in the civil status in Durrës.
But how "died" and how much did this plan cost?
The decision states that Mnela died "on January 3, 2003 at 11:05 a.m. in his apartment in the Bolivian Republic of Venezuela in the state of Miranda, municipality of Sucke." To make this death certificate more reliable, the Petare Parish Church has also been added to the document.
After a judicial process which cost 3850 lek less than 40 euros, the court of Durrës six months after the start of this trial decided "Acceptance of the legal fact by declaring the Albanian citizen Leonard Mnela, born in 1969, dead".
The past of Leonard Mnela
The arrest of Leonard Mnela was made possible in Michigan through a collaboration between the Albanian criminal police department in collaboration with two American agencies, while he was extradited a few days ago from the USA. Leonard Mnela will undergo investigations for criminal events that happened some time ago in Albania, where he is suspected to have been involved. Leonard Mnela alias Leon Kolmnela alias Leonard Kolmnela was sentenced to 25 years in prison in Italy for cooperation in a criminal organization, kidnapping, attempted extortion, violation of the law on weapons and drug trafficking in large quantities.
