Ervin Shahini, sentenced to life imprisonment for murder and wounding, was extradited from South Korea to Albania.

The photo of Ervin Shahini, otherwise known as the killer of taxi drivers, who was extradited from South Korea, has been published.

The 50-year-old, who also uses the other identity Spartak Lazaj, has been declared guilty by a final decision for the criminal offenses of theft with violence resulting in death, theft with violence committed in cooperation and removal of the prisoner from the place of residence.

In 1995, Ervin Shahini killed and wounded several taxi drivers with a knife. After billing them as taxis to go to the desired destinations, the 50-year-old stabbed the drivers, took their cars and left the scene.

The Minister of the Interior, Taulant Balla, has reacted regarding the extradition from South Korea of ​​Ervin Shahini alias Spartak Lazaj, who is accused of murder and wounding.

Through a message, Balla emphasizes that impunity is being dealt a blow.

"THE STRIKE OF IMPUNITY! We are working every day, with intensity, with Interpol to find persons wanted by justice, to end impunity for persons hiding in other countries or in Albania.

Congratulations to the State Police, the General Prosecutor's Office, Interpol Tirana and Seoul, as well as the General Secretariat of Interpol (Fugitives Investigative Support (FIS) Sector), for the cooperation, coordination and successful finalization of the detention and extradition of a citizen sentenced to imprisonment of for life for serious crimes against the person",  says Taulant Balla.

Regarding the event, the Korean media gave other details yesterday.

According to local media, the man from Albania became naturalized after marrying a Korean woman in 2012, was forcibly repatriated to his country. It was later discovered that he had fled Albania after committing a murder and robbery. According to extradition documents, Shahini fatally shot a taxi driver in Albania in August 1995 and stole the taxi and escaped. In addition, he was sentenced to life in prison on charges of attempted robbery and murder three times.

In March 1997, when he was imprisoned, civil war broke out and Shahini managed to escape by taking advantage of the chaos. At that time, he stole the name of another person with intellectual disabilities, issued a passport with this name and fled Albania. After that time, he lived in the United States and Canada, while entering Korea in November 2011. He even married a Korean woman the following year and received Korean citizenship in December 2015.

It was in July of last year that it was discovered that the 50-year-old had been living with his hidden identity. The Ministry of Justice cooperated with the Albanian authorities for his identification and initiated judicial proceedings for extradition and cancellation of the residence permit in the High Court of Seoul.

His citizenship of the Republic of Korea was revoked and he was repatriated to Albania. South Korea's Ministry of Justice said: “It is an example of the government's willingness to ensure that criminals are punished in accordance with their guilt and to protect the people of the Republic of Korea from further crimes. We will strengthen our network of international cooperation to protect people's security".
