Klajdi Karaj, is an Albanian who went illegally to Great Britain with the promise of a better life, before entering and working on a cannabis farm.
Klajdi Karaj, desperate for the low-paying jobs on offer in Albania, responded to social media ads touting the riches and better life on offer in the UK.
After he arrived in Britain, the gangs that had lured him to start a new life first got him a job at a car wash, but then they quickly demanded that he pay the transport costs. This forced the young Albanian to take care of a cannabis farm.
He was taken into custody following a search warrant executed by police in Stratford Road, Heaton, Newcastle, on May 24 this year. The inspection revealed that four rooms of the house had been turned into a cannabis farm. The court heard the value of the 'grass house' was somewhere between £14,000 and £61,000.
Karaj was found inside the apartment and was arrested. He refused to answer most questions but told police he had come to the UK illegally.
The 21-year-old, who has no previous convictions in this country, pleaded guilty to producing cannabis and was sentenced to 14 months in prison.
