Two cousins of Albanian nationality clashed in the cuckoo hall in Italy over accusations of involvement in drug trafficking.
49-year-old Gencian Subashi and 37-year-old Shkëlzen Abazi are accused of transporting 11 kilograms of pure cocaine, seized on March 30, 2023.
Genciani will be tried in a shortened procedure, while Shkëlzeni is facing the usual trial before the second panel of the Latina Court, presided over by judge Francesca Coculo. Today, on May 7, the last hearing was held for the 37-year-old Albanian before the discussion and sentencing scheduled for October 4.
The manager of the restaurant 0773, located in SS Pontina, reported to the courtroom, questioned by the defense lawyers, who explained how the two Albanians were regular customers without adding much to the hearing, as public prosecutor Valerio De Luca there was no need to ask him any questions.
Afterwards, the accused Shkëlzen Abazi himself was questioned, but not before he had issued a complex spontaneous statement in which he said he was completely unrelated to the charges. He explained that at the time of his arrest he was working for his cousin Gencian Subashi, who runs an import-export company specializing in flower trading.
The 37-year-old recalled that fateful day of March 30 last year, explaining that he had borrowed the van from his cousin's company and then witnessed a strange passing that happened after the two had left together from the parking lot of the Tavola Hot bar 0773. On the street the cousin told him to pull over and at that moment an unidentified third person intervened with whom the exchange took place.
An exchange that would have remained mysterious for the 37-year-old, so much so that, after a few minutes, he was just stopped by the Carabinieri, in Via Isonzo, to his surprise he would have seen what the increased load on the road contained just before. After hearing the version of the accused, public prosecutor De Lica asked the 37-year-old the main question of the case.
Even his cousin, 49-year-old Gencian Subashi Gencian, claims to have been framed. The problem is that they both accuse each other, two equal but opposite versions. Today's accused said that he could not understand these charges and that he also refused to confront his cousin, whom he had seen for a short time after his arrest, after he became enraged when he read about the charges against him. A war of accusations and counter-accusations over a rather large shipment of cocaine.
Their arrest, as mentioned, dates back to the afternoon of March 30, 2023, when the Carabinieri of the Borgo Grappa Di Latina station arrested them for red-handed possession for the purpose of trafficking narcotics. The two Albanian cousins, both without criminal records and residents of Latina for some time, are practically beyond suspicion, the younger of them is an entrepreneur in the night club sector, while the other, to whom the van is registered, seems to work in flower export sector.
The two were stopped together, in a van (a Fiat Doblò), during the daily traffic control. From the beginning, the two, as reported by the carabinieri, appeared particularly agitated and impatient, and therefore underwent a search that resulted in the discovery of 16 blocks of cocaine, each about 1 kilogram, hidden inside a trash can. A total of about 16 kilograms of drugs.
Afterwards, the house search at the home of the arrested, in Viale Kennedy (cemetery area), gave negative results and the same regularly checked van was found to be the property of the driver.
In April 2023, the two men appeared before the former pre-trial judge of the Court of Latina, Giorgia Castriota, as part of the bail questioning. Both the 49-year-old and the 37-year-old denied being involved in drug trafficking, claiming that they did not know about the presence of the large load inside the vehicle in which they were detained.
After the evaluation ordered by the then prosecutor Claudio De Lazzaro, it was found that the drug was 74% pure. This means that the confirmed cocaine is approximately 11 kilograms.
