The Special Court today announced the verdict in the murder of former police officer Santiago Malko, an event that occurred on August 27, 2019.

The jury decided that defendant Leonard Duka be sentenced to 30 years in prison.

The court's decision comes after a lengthy investigation and judicial process, while authorities underline the importance of this sentence for justice against officers who have fallen in the line of duty.

On January 19, the hearing for the head of the Duka clan took place, where his lawyer presented his defense. Duka himself declared his innocence.

"I declare that I am innocent and the Prosecutor has no facts against me. This is a fabrication by the police to harm me. I have faith in justice,"  he said.

While his lawyer emphasized that SPAK's conclusions are not based on evidence and the law.

"There is no evidence, but only deductions created by an incomplete and biased investigative process, based mostly on stories reported in the media," the lawyer said.

According to the lawyer, the wiretapping at SKY ECC is not legal and that the identification made by the Judicial Police Officer of the codes was "amateur and unreliable" as standard procedure was not followed.

Santiago Malko's mother was also present, who directly accused Leonard Duka.

"Leonard Duka killed my son. He brought Erlis Duka and Ilir Selmani to me and told me that I had nothing to do with Santi, but he went out and killed my son in the middle of the street. I don't want a life sentence, I want the death penalty for this,"  she said.

SPAK had requested the punishment for:

Leonard Duka – 32 years in prison/ The sentence will be served in a high-security prison.

Erlis Duka – 25 years in prison

Fatmir Hyseni – 32 years in prison

Aleksandër Manjhaku - 22 years in prison

Oltjon Loga – 23 years in prison

Dritan Agai - 23 years in prison

They are accused of "Premeditated Murder", "Unlicensed Weapons Possession", "Narcotics Trafficking", these crimes committed in the form of a Structured Criminal Group.

We recall that Leonard Duka was extradited from Belgium last year. He is accused of being one of the organizers of the murder of Santiago Malko in August 2019 in Tirana. On this charge, Duka was arrested in Belgium on February 14, 2023.

Elis Duka, Fatmir Hyseni, Aleksandër Maxhaku and Oltion Logu are still wanted for the murder of Santiago Malko. 25 years in prison have been given to Ilir Selmani, while the Supreme Court returned the case of Blendi Tetë, also accused in this case, for trial.

Leonard Duka's name also appeared in the "Revanshi" operation file, where communications and conversations held on the "Sky" and "Encrochat" applications were revealed.

In these conversations, Duka hatched plans for the physical elimination of Ervis Martinaj and his close social connections, such as Erigers Mihasi. Based on these suspicions, SPAK has charged Leonard Duka with providing the conditions for murder within the framework of a structured criminal group.
