
The 39-year-old is accused of murdering Ed Mema, the head of a group of Albanian drug traffickers.
In April 2020 the center of Strombeek-Bever in Belgium was rocked by shootings. The owner of a pizzeria, 42 years old, was shot dead inside the pizzeria. The perpetrator fled, but was arrested by the police in Merchtem a short time later. He had set fire to the vehicle in which the murder weapon was located, and then left on a bicycle. The investigation showed that the whole event was related to drug trafficking, and then it was discovered that the owner of the pizzeria who was killed was the head of a drug organization.
After his death, his brother was placed at the head of the organization, while his wife held a secondary role for some time, until she was removed from the organization. In December 2020, a series of checks were carried out in the apartments of the suspects.
This showed that the 12 members, mostly Albanians and Bulgarians, were importing and exporting cocaine from Strombeek-Bever. They traded at least 84 kilograms of cocaine.
"They imported the drug from Colombia to the Netherlands. They received cocaine with a purity level of 95 to 96%," said the prosecutor of the case.
Meanwhile today, eight women and four men were chosen to form the popular jury responsible for the trial, before the Assize Court of Flemish Brabant, of the Albanian Afrim Mema. The 39-year-old is accused of murdering Ed Mema, the head of a group of Albanian drug traffickers. The trial will open on Thursday, under close scrutiny, after several months of adjournment.
Edit Mema, 42 years old and unrelated to the accused, was killed on 8 April 2020 in a pizzeria in Strombeek-Bever, in the Grimbergen entity. The accused was arrested a few moments later and admitted to being the perpetrator. The investigation showed that the victim was at the head of an international cocaine trafficking network. The prosecution believes that the accused went to the pizzeria with the intention of killing Ed Mema.
Last September, the trial was adjourned for four months after the defense presented 267 pages of additional submissions, including on the "Sky ECC" (an encrypted messaging system used massively by the criminal community and brought to light by the Belgian police in 2021). . The other parties to the trial then requested additional time so they could review the documents.
Twelve jurors and two alternates were selected Monday. The trial, which is expected to last a week, is being presided over by Peter Hartoch. The public prosecutor is represented by Ben Pieters.
