Despite the fact that during the last two years Shyqo Kalemi's two sons had escaped several assassination attempts, the latter seems not to have been spared such a one.
A mafia assassination took place on Saturday evening in the center of Memaliaj, where three people lost their lives and another was seriously injured.
The target of the attack were the brothers Shyqo and Artur Kalemi, respectively 74 and 57 years old, who were allegedly shot for revenge.
Despite the fact that during the last two years Shyqo Kalemi's two sons had escaped several assassination attempts, the latter seems not to have been spared such a one. Like every evening, he and his brother, who was the owner of the bar, were sitting at a table, where the suspected assassins approached in a BMW vehicle and opened fire with bursts, leaving Shyqo Kalemi dead on the spot and two innocent citizens. While his brother Artur Kalemi was seriously injured and is fighting for his life in the Gjirokastra hospital.
At the time of the incident, there were other customers in the bar who miraculously escaped unhurt. Before the event, it is suspected that the killers had studied the area and the route they would follow, but this had not caught anyone's attention.
After the incident, they traveled to Memaliaj, where they burned their BMW vehicle in the village of Bejaj. After extinguishing the flames, the police discovered 3 Kalashnikov-type firearms inside this car, which are suspected to have been used in the incident. Cars and weapons will be examined to reveal valuable data for the investigation, while several people have been escorted and several roadblocks have been set up on the main axes connected to Memaliaj. The police, on the other hand, are working with the security camera footage in the area.
The genesis of this mafia assassination is suspected to be the conflict due to the breakdown of drug deals. After a meeting that did not go well in a hotel in Saranda between Edmond Papa and Aleksandër Sadikaj, the latter was eliminated with explosives on June 11, 2022 in Tirana. His murder is officially unsolved, but Sadikaj's cousins accused businessman Edmond Papa and took revenge within 6 months. In December 2022, the Pope was killed in a bar in Tirana, and for this, two people have been arrested who are suspected to have been ordered by Andrea Kalemi, the son of the victim of the mafia assassination Shyqo Kalemi.
Andrea himself survived two assassination attempts in Greece. In August 2023 on the island of Pax in Greece he was shot while on vacation with his family, and later stabbed while in a prison in Greece. His brother Zamir Kalemi escaped a mafia assassination in January of this year in Tirana Ring Road. He was shot by a moving vehicle but the diversion of the Smart car he was driving saved him. He was seriously injured, but managed to survive his injuries.
Unfortunately, this Saturday's assassination is a story that repeats itself, where innocent citizens lose their lives due to the clash between criminal groups. A similar assassination took place in 2022 in Don Bosco in Tirana, where Erion Çela was mistakenly killed and other random people were injured at the scene, while in March last year the bartender Mimoza Paja lost her life. In this Saturday's attack, waiter Gledion Muka and customer Marsel Çela lost their lives.
