21-year-old woman disappears in Italy, allegedly threatened by an Albanian;
Elena Rebeca Burcioiu

It is suspected that an Albanian citizen had threatened the girl and her friend before her disappearance.

Investigators in Italy are also looking into the possibility of a prostitution ring in the investigation into the disappearance of Elena Rebeca Burcioiu, a 21-year-old Romanian woman who has not been heard from since the afternoon of March 2. This was reported by the Italian agency ANSA, citing investigative sources.

According to the testimony of a friend and her roommate, a man with Albanian citizenship had threatened both of them a few days before their disappearance and had demanded money to allow them to work in the area as prostitutes.

Law enforcement and civil protection have been searching for more than eleven days in the rural areas of the province of Foggia, where the girl was last seen. After her 38-year-old friend reported her missing, investigators first found the fur jacket Elena was wearing that day and, a few kilometers away, her mobile phone.

According to the woman's testimony, the two had arrived in Italy about three months ago and rented an apartment in Canosa di Puglia, in the province of Bari. They initially worked as seasonal workers in agriculture, but then decided to move to the Foggia area to work in prostitution along state road 16, which connects the city of Foggia with San Severo.

The events that caught the attention of investigators began on February 27. According to the testimony, a person with Albanian citizenship stopped next to Elena while she was under a bridge near the exit to Manfredonia and tried to pull her into the car. He then returned and demanded money from both women to allow them to continue working in that area, claiming around 150 euros every three days from each. He would have returned in the following days, repeating the threats.

According to the same testimony, the last time the friend saw this person was on March 1, the day before Elena's disappearance, when he had asked them to work for him, a request that was rejected.

On the morning of March 2, at 11:16 AM, Elena allegedly left in a black BMW, in which was another man, different from the person who had previously threatened her. At 12:37 PM, her friend called her, but the call was cut off suddenly while they were talking and a man's voice could be heard in the background. Since then, her phone has only rang without being answered.

Investigators later found the cellphone about two kilometers from where it was last seen. According to the friend's statement, her main suspicions are not with the person Elena drove away with, but with the Albanian man who, according to her, "wanted to force them to work for him."

Sniffer dogs and drones are also searching the area, checking fields, abandoned buildings and wells. So far, the investigation has a few solid clues: a jacket found near the road, a phone a few hundred meters away and the last phone call to a friend at 12:37. After that, there is no trace of the 21-year-old.
