The State Archive has recalled the fact that Saranda once had – in the Italian period – a maiden name. It was called "Porto Edda".
"By government decision of 1939, in honor of Mussolini's daughter, Saranda was baptized with the name 'Porto Edda'. Thanks to careful preservation, the city's past materializes in beautiful medieval architecture and ancient historical monuments", the Archive writes just two sentences about this special aspect of a city's past, which is all about ancient ruins.
Origin of the name: It comes from an early Christian monastery dedicated to the Forty Saints (Ágii Saránda in Greek), (Santi Quaranta in Italian).
Previous names: Onhezmi or Porto Edda in honor of Benito Mussolini's daughter.
Founded: Saranda is a city with more than 2,000 years of history, built in the area of the southern coast of Albania, rich in rare values of Albanian cultural and archaeological heritage, as well as European.
Main objects: Butrint Castle, Lëkursi Castle.
Characteristics: It is described as the Albanian Riviera.
