Bonnie Tyler, known worldwide for the immortal hit "Total Eclipse of the Heart," has died at the age of 75, according to a statement released Thursday on her official website and social media accounts.

"Bonnie's family and team are heartbroken to announce that Bonnie passed away unexpectedly last night in hospital in Portugal as a result of the illness for which she was being treated. We will issue a further statement soon, but at this time we request privacy to deal with this tragedy,"  the statement said.

Bonnie Tyler, whose real name was Gaynor Hopkins, died Wednesday evening in a hospital in Portugal. Her death comes weeks after the artist underwent emergency intestinal surgery and was placed in an induced coma, according to a statement posted on her Facebook page in May.

An update dated June 15th announced that the singer was "no longer in a coma," but remained "very ill and in intensive care in a hospital in Portugal."

Tyler became one of the most popular voices in pop and rock music in the 1980s. The song "Total Eclipse of the Heart" reached number one on the music charts in both the United Kingdom and the United States, becoming one of the biggest hits of the decade.

Her repertoire also includes well-known songs such as "Holding Out For A Hero", which was used in the 1984 film Footloose starring Kevin Bacon, as well as "It's A Heartache" and "If You Were A Woman (And I Was A Man)", which consolidated her status as one of the most beloved artists in international music.

Despite health problems in recent months, Tyler had planned to return to the stage and had anticipated a series of concerts later this year.

The news of her passing has brought numerous reactions from the world of politics and music.

The First Minister of Wales, Rhun ap Iorwerth, said he was "deeply saddened" to learn of the artist's death.

"Wales has lost a true icon whose music brought joy to so many," he wrote in a post on the X platform.

"I express my sincere condolences to her family, friends and fans around the world," he added.

Musician Rick Parfitt Jr. also paid tribute to Tyler.

"This is a very sad day... She was a legend, a hottie and a great friend," he wrote in a post on X, also posting a joint photo with the singer.

"Rest in peace, bright eyes. You were destined to surpass us all in life," he concluded.

Bonnie Tyler's career spanned more than four decades. In 2013, she represented the United Kingdom in the European Song Contest, Eurovision.

In an interview with British newspaper The Daily Telegraph at the time, she said it was "a bit shocking" to have been selected to represent the country.

"It's a little political, but let's be realistic, 120 million people watch Eurovision," Tyler said.

During her career, Bonnie Tyler was nominated for prestigious awards such as the Grammy Awards and the Brit Awards. In 2023, she was awarded the title Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE), one of the United Kingdom's highest civilian honors, for her outstanding contribution to music.

With her distinctive voice and songs that became anthems for entire generations, Bonnie Tyler remains one of the most important figures in pop-rock music, leaving behind an artistic legacy that will continue to live on through her work.
