Rita Petro has been selected as the Albanian Poetry Laureate, the highest professional recognition given to a writer with a prominent contribution to the field of poetry.
The title "Poet Laureate" with a two-year term was awarded to Petros by the jury composed of Primo Shllaku, Ymer Çiraku Aleksandër Çipa, Majlinda Rama, Koloreto Cukali, under the auspices of the National Center for Books and Reading.
While she was praised as a writer and publisher with a great contribution to Albanian literature, Petro said that besides being an award, this title is a mission for her.
"It is a great responsibility, a great appreciation and beyond the responsibility it is a great mission. We must think about how Albanian poetry can reach young people, especially readers of different ages," said the writer.
Petro emphasizes that poetry can play a formative role in the personal and social development of young people, and therefore open projects or courses can help release complexes.
"Being within school programs, I know that they are limited there and generally traditional poetry is done. Poetry strips us of complexes. We need to remove the feeling of bullying. I have made a plan that we will try to realize. The poetry that is developed today can be done through projects or open courses, because projects for contemporary poets are also foreseen," she said.
The Poet Laureate is tasked with promoting initiatives to increase awareness and appreciation of the art of poetry throughout the country.
