The great writer of Albanian literature, Naum Prifti, has passed away at the age of 91.

The priest was also a screenwriter, essayist, playwright and an important figure in Albanian literature and culture. He lived in the United States of America where for years he directed Vatra, becoming a strong voice of the Albanian cause, just like his brother Peter Prifti long ago.

There have been many condolences for the Prifti family. The chairman of "VATRĖ", Elmi Berisha, while expressing his pain for this great loss, writes that the American diaspora lost a powerful voice that contributed for decades to the nation and homeland.

" With deep sadness and regret, I learned the news of the departure from earthly life of your honorable father, the great man of Albanian letters, the passionate writer, the wise man of the Albanian word, the master of prose and storytelling, our friend, the great patriot , the linguist, the special man, the outstanding activity of the national issue, Naum Prifti.

On behalf of the Pan-Albanian Federation of America VATRA, of Dielli newspaper, on behalf of all Vatras and my family, I send you our most sincere and painful condolences for the loss of your dear and unforgettable father.

With the departure of Naum Prifti, Vatra lost its former secretary who contributed for 15 years, Dielli newspaper lost its closest contributor and collaborator for decades, the Albanian nation lost an honored name in the field of literature and linguistics. The media lost a sharp pen, America's diaspora lost a powerful voice that contributed decades to the nation and homeland.

May God give you strength to bear the pain of losing your beloved and dear father. All of us together as a hearth are with you and the Priest family, your relatives, friends and well-wishers in these moments of sadness, farewell and irreversible loss. Who was Naum the Priest?

He was born in Rehovo, Kolonje, where he completed primary school. Then, in Erseke, at the age of 8. In 1953, he graduated from the Medical Polytechnic in Tirana. He worked for a year as an assistant doctor at the Korça Sanatorium. Passionate about literature, he continues his studies in Albanian Language and Literature at the State University of Tirana. During the years 1954-1960, he served as an editor in the magazine Hosteni. While from 1960-67 as an editor in the magazine "Ylli". He then worked as a teacher from 1967-70 in Divjakë, Lushnja.

In 1970-72, he was responsible as editor for the newsletter "Children's Stage", at the Central House of Popular Creativity, Tirana and as a theater inspector at the Ministry of Education and Culture during 1974-76. In these years, he also served as an external lecturer for Albanian Literature at the University of Tirana.

In 1991, he emigrated to America (New York), where he continues to give his help to the Albanian community here and to Albanian Literature. In 1995, he was elected secretary of the Vatra Pan-Albanian Federation, a position he still holds today. With the creation of the Association of Albanian-American Writers, they elect him as its president. He has won many awards for literary works such as volumes of stories, novels, children's literature, humor and film scripts.

In 2001, he was honored by the Ministry of Culture and the League of Writers with the award: "Silver Feather", for the volume with the legend "Mother of the Sun". The "Golden Feather" award for the volume of humorous stories and sketches "As Miço, As Muço" from the Albanian-American Writers' Association, New York, 2003. For his long, continuous literary and artistic work, he has been decorated from the People's Assembly with the Labor Medal and the "2nd Class Naim Frashëri Order".

His literary creativity is diverse and spans several genres: stories, dramas, comedies, novels, film scripts, pieces for puppet theater, scripts for cartoons, biographies, critical articles, journalism, etc.

There are almost 100 literary works, more than years of life and twice half a century of creativity. Thousands and thousands of pages written by hand, typed with a simple typewriter, and thrown into the computer of our day, hundreds and hundreds of analyses, discussions, correspondence, conversations, which you can safely call journalism, for the idea and the message they carry and convey.
