Spiro Shano left this world, but he will be remembered for a long time...
The separation from the life of a person is a sad event for all those who were related to the deceased, it creates the new history of the change of the verb: it is in was, but his activity in life, the trace he left in the social environment and in public opinion are important.
In the area of Albanian sports history, the premature departure of the "Great Master" Spiro Shano at the age of 73, will leave a great void for his family, friends and colleagues, and undoubtedly for the world of sports and especially that of Albanian basketball.
Since childhood, Spiro faced the loss of his father Theollori Shanos, he had to face the difficulties of life with two sisters and two brothers under the upbringing of his mother Sofies. He loved sports since his childhood and thanks to his tall stature, he was dictated by master Muhamet Përmeti to join the "Dinamo" youth team.
The boy Spiro begins individual training with a titanic work and very soon deserves to wear the number 11 jersey of the first team of "Dinamos" with the great coach Feti Borova. The very beginning of the sport of basketball is dedicated to the years 1947, when the Albanian Basketball Federation (FSHB) was accepted into the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) and thanks to Feti and his friends who, with talent and work, laid the first stones in the foundations of Albanian basketball. Spiro Shano with his team shows the best individual values in the role of the center and very soon the Dinamo team is ranked among the four best teams in the country.
The teams of Partizan and 17 November were the rivals of the time and relied on quality players, so even the entry of "Dinamo" into this rivalry was not a sudden one, the conditions were ripe for a full generation of perspective and high sports ego to come. These are the years when the "Partizan" team appeared in the international arena with dignity and in its composition there were players of international caliber such as Agim Fagu, Kastriot Mushi, Kushtrim Zaçe, to be invited as a booster of this great team you not only had to be someone, but also to contribute to the return of the match as an irreplaceable center until that time like Spiro Shano who deservedly received the nickname "Menegini of Albanian basketball", a great name of world basketball, as was the Italian basketball player of the 1950s -1974.
Now the 21-year-old "Dynamo player", Spiro Shano, becomes a member of the national team with coach Feti Borova. The golden years of the rise of Albanian basketball also bear the sweat and effort of Shano on the fields and halls of the sports palaces, both outside and inside the country. Meetings with the "Partizan" team in Holland, Belgium, France, Italy, Hungary, China and with those of the national team in Czechoslovakia, Greece, China, Korea and many other countries.
Spiro Shano has over 100 international matches recorded in his sports career with the armband of the team captain. The qualifications in the 8 best teams in Europe naturally also had the help of the Shano center. It is the years 1974-1976 and 1977, when this great team like "Partizani" asserts itself as one of the most dangerous rivals with the world-level teams, whether they are from the former Yugoslavia, or European ones. Also on the international level with the national team, where the master Spiro Shano and his friends undoubtedly shone.
Spiro continued playing basketball until 1987, that is, in a span of 20 years, he faced these times with an extraordinary spartan perseverance and discipline. He trained individually after each session and expressed "Talent, Luck and Work", he was a man who dedicated himself to the latter "work and only through work I became a basketball player".
And in this man, despite the training and sports activities, he still willingly completed his studies at the "7 November" technical school, with high results and received the right to continue to the higher school, branch of economics and finance, with which he was profiled after graduation where he worked in many sectors.
In 1991, he started his private activity with the sale and purchase of goods from abroad and felt himself safe and within the profession. He raised two children, a girl and a boy, with the dedication of his wife, Life, who stayed by his side until she died. In 2017, he received the title of "Grand Master" for his contribution to the field of sports. Spiro Shano became a model for generations of Albanian sports, so with his loss, we will not lose the memory he left us, the athlete, parent, friend, and minority who lived with us Albanians in good and difficult days, especially Albanian immigrants in Greece. Let gratitude to him be a crown of gratitude on this day of separation./ Pamphlet
