The Devolliçe dance, a men's dance from the Devolli area, considered one of the country's greatest folklore treasures, has been declared a "national masterpiece of intangible cultural heritage" by the Ministry of Culture.
After several years of work to complete the file of this dance, the new status paves the way for efforts to make it part of the UNESCO list.
For years this dance has been performed at every family celebration, event and important moment, while in 1957 at the International Folklore Festival in Moscow, among 135 countries, the Devolliçe Dance group won the II Prize.
Agron Kordalli, the son of one of the dancers who performed in Russia, continues to preserve this tradition and passes it on to the younger generations while explaining that this dance, which is symbolic of man's gratitude for the earth, is different from the others.
Although it is considered one of the most difficult and complex dances in interpretation, the devolliche dance is played throughout the Devolli area by all ages and remains one of the pearls of Albanian folk creativity.
