A large-scale fire engulfed the historic Sannazaro Theater in the central Chiaia district of Naples in the early hours of Tuesday. The flames broke out shortly after 6:30 a.m. and quickly spread to a significant part of the building, damaging in particular the historic dome and also affecting an adjacent residential building.
According to reports from Italian media and local authorities, residents of the area raised the alarm at dawn after seeing thick smoke and flames coming from the upper part of the building.
Eyewitnesses reported that the smoke made the air difficult to breathe throughout the surrounding area.
The fire service intervened with several teams to extinguish the fire and secure the perimeter, while law enforcement surrounded the area and launched investigations to determine the causes of the incident.
According to initial official information, the dome of the theater was completely destroyed. The building, built in the 19th century and considered a symbol of Neapolitan theatrical tradition, suffered severe damage. Four people were taken to hospital due to smoke inhalation, but authorities confirmed that there were no serious injuries. Emergency crews also evacuated residents of nearby buildings as a safety measure.
Authorities are continuing their investigations to clarify the causes of the fire. According to unofficial investigative sources, an electrical short circuit may have caused the fire, but the institutions are awaiting the results of the final technical verifications. The area remains cordoned off and traffic on Via Chiaia has been restricted to facilitate firefighting operations and ensure public safety.
The Sannazaro Theatre, inaugurated in 1847, has been an important centre of cultural life in Naples for over a century, hosting theatre performances and artistic activities. The city's cultural community is awaiting a full assessment of the damage and decisions on the possible restoration of the building, while work continues on the final extinguishing of the fires and the cleaning of the area.
