On the 34th anniversary of the creation of the "Rilindja Demokratike" newspaper, the chairman of the Euro-Atlantic Democrats, Lulzim Basha, praised the courage of journalists and intellectuals who brought free speech to Albania, opening a new era for democracy and an independent press.
In his post, Basha expresses concern about the challenges of media freedom in the country, threats to journalists, self-censorship and the lack of transparency from institutions.
"January 5 marks 34 years since the day when the "Democratic Renaissance" brought free speech to Albania for the first time, opening a new chapter for democracy and an independent press. The courage of the journalists and intellectuals of that time remains an inspiration to all those who even today believe that free media is the pillar of a democratic society.
Meanwhile, the freedom and pluralism of the media in our country is endangered: from the lack of security for journalists, threats to editorial independence, political and economic pressures, self-censorship, to the closing of doors for transparency by institutions. But without an independent press, there can be no functioning democracy or sustainable development.
In this 34th anniversary of the Democratic Renaissance, I express my deep respect and gratitude to all those who have contributed over the years to make this media a forum for free speech, but also to all journalists and editors who continue to stay in the trenches of information. independent, in the service of the public interest.
Let this day be an important reminder of the necessity of independent media in protecting the truth, public interest and the democratic future of Albania", he writes.
