The head of the Socialist Party Parliamentary Group, Taulant Balla, responded ironically to Sali Berisha from the Parliament podium, congratulating him on his re-election as head of the Democratic Party, while defending the planned investment in Zvërnec and the government's economic balance.
Balla's reaction came after Berisha attacked the government for the project in Zvërnec, the Vlora airport and the development of tourism, warning that Edi Rama's political end will not be in the "village", as the prime minister himself said, but in prison.
On the other hand, Balla focused on foreign investments and the project expected to be developed in Zvërnec, which he described as the largest investment in the country's history.
" I cannot but appreciate the fact and the pro-investment stance. A historic investment, the largest in the history of Albania, which I will talk about a little later. It was said here that foreign investments have fallen. Now, foreign direct investments, in 2012, which was your last year in power, Mr. Sali, were 666 million euros. In 2025, the figure for foreign direct investments is 1.64 billion euros. So foreign direct investments in Albania have increased by at least 2.5 times ," declared Balla.
The socialist then ironized the process of electing Berisha as head of the Democratic Party, referring to the lack of real competition.
" But sir, congratulations on being elected as the leader of the DP and it was not known who would win. But after such a strong race, fought until the last minute, Mr. Sali won. Meanwhile, I also join in congratulating Piter Bayer, with all the meanings that his congratulation contained ," said Balla amidst irony.
The leader of the socialist group also spoke about the performance of the economy, claiming that Albania has tripled its Gross Domestic Product over the past few years.
" Meanwhile, as far as GDP is concerned, GDP was somewhere below 10 billion euros, while in 2025 we exceeded 27 billion euros. So we have tripled the country's economy in such a short time. No country has done this in such a short time ," he said.
Finally, Balla also responded to criticisms about the Vlora airport and the opposition's claims about tourism.
" Since something was said about the Vlora airport, the Vlora airport has been built, it is being completed, where the footprint of the Vlora airport has been for 100 years. The number of tourists, you can feel us here, because we can't hold back our laughter. In a few days, for the first time in Rinas, the first intercontinental flight will be inaugurated, from Tirana to Toronto ," declared Balla.
The clash between the majority and the opposition comes at a time when the political debate has shifted to the planned investment in Zvërnec, a project that the government considers strategic for tourism, while the opposition and activists oppose it, raising concerns about the impact on the environment and the public interest.
