The ambassadors of the 27 member states of the European Union have approved the provisional draft of the EUCP, paving the way for the Intergovernmental Conference with Albania, which will be held on May 26, 2026 in Brussels, at 7:00 PM.

The confirmation of the date of the Intergovernmental Conference is considered another important step in Albania's negotiation process for membership in the European Union and comes at a time when the country aims to advance with the opening and closing of key chapters.

Tuesday's meeting will be the eighth Accession Conference between Albania and the EU and will focus mainly on the first Chapter Group, known as "Foundations", which is also considered the main pillar of the European integration process.

According to the official announcement, the conference will serve to confirm Albania's fulfillment of interim standards, as well as to determine the final standards for chapters related to the functioning of democratic institutions, public administration reform and the rule of law.

The focus will be on Chapter 23, which relates to the judiciary and fundamental rights, as well as Chapter 24, which includes justice, freedom and security. These are considered among the most important and sensitive chapters in the negotiation process with the European Union.

Also, part of the discussions will be economic and financial criteria, including Chapter 5 on public procurement, Chapter 18 on statistics and Chapter 32 on financial control.

Albania's European integration process has entered a more intense phase in recent months.
