The awkward moment during the meeting in Tokyo between Prime Minister Edi Rama and his Japanese counterpart Sanae Takaichi has gone viral.
Prime Minister Edi Rama's script didn't go well in Japan. A not-so-comfortable moment for Rama has gone viral, after Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi did not allow him to kiss her hand during the official greeting.
In the released video, Rama approaches his Japanese counterpart, but Takaichi immediately reacts by pulling his hand away and avoiding contact. Thus creating an awkward situation in front of the cameras, which the prime minister pretended not to pay attention to.
After the video was published, many online users immediately compared the episode to the close relationship that Rama has publicly displayed with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
The Albanian Prime Minister, who has often called Meloni "sister", has been seen on several occasions kissing her hand or using overly friendly gestures towards her during public and official meetings. Precisely for this reason, many commentators interpreted the episode in Tokyo as a moment where the same style of communication was not received in the same way.
However, there is also the possibility that the Japanese prime minister's reaction may also be related to the formality and strict ethics of Japanese diplomatic culture, where such gestures are considered unusual at official appearances.
