Edi Rama has not spared jokes regarding Albania's EU membership process, which he compared to the marriage process.
From Japan, where he is conducting an official visit, Rama said that Albania has proven that it is not only a stable and reliable partner, but also that it loves the EU so much.
For the Prime Minister, the European Union needs not only Albania, but the entire Western Balkans.
" The full integration of the Western Balkans and Albania is not simply our demand, or the region's, but a strategic need for Europe itself.
Albania has proven that it is not only a stable and reliable partner, but also that it loves the EU so much.
"We want to get married, we insist and we will get married. We are aligned with the EU's foreign policy, a committed NATO ally ," Rama said.
Rama continued by saying that Albania does not have a plan B, other than integration, while recalling the fact that for decades the country has suffered isolation, describing it as the North Korea of Europe.
" I come from a country that for decades was known as the North Korea of Europe, a country where the state did its utmost to isolate not only the borders but also the minds. We had no other fronts except one, Mao's China and the hatred of the Cultural Revolution."
The dark spirit of revolution crossed the continent and found refuge in our country. Communism then fell, we chose democracy. For us, European integration has not been a bureaucratic process, nor an ATM, but a national aspiration. We have never seen it be so concrete and so real in our modern history. We have entered the decisive phase of our European journey.
A new phase of closing chapters. The road ahead remains demanding and challenging, but we have never been more determined and have never even imagined and no longer contemplate a plan B other than the EU.
This is because we are convinced that there is no plan B against freedom, the rule of law, there is no plan B against democracy.
"EU membership is exactly that. It is not about joining an organization, but about transforming society, building institutions, strengthening the rule of law, fighting corruption and crime, creating a state that serves citizens, instead of citizens serving the state, " Rama said.
