Outgoing Democratic Party MP Ferdinand Xhaferaj has made strong accusations against DP leader Sali Berisha during an interview with News24, following the loss of the May 11 elections.
Xhaferaj stated that Berisha did not invest in a new leadership after the 2013 defeat, but supported a leader like Lulzim Basha who, according to him, guaranteed Berisha's family interests. He accused the former prime minister of interfering in the race between Basha and Olldashi and then being the "guarantor" of Basha's stay even after the defeats in 2017 and 2021.
"Berisha built a disingenuous fable to return to the leadership of the DP after leaving Basha. He claimed he did it for the party, but in fact his actions only served personal interests," said Xhaferaj.
Ironizing Berisha's statements that justice is being seized by Rama, Xhaferaj asked: "Who gave Berisha the party seal? If justice is being seized, then wasn't it Rama who gave it to him?"
The Democratic MP also criticized the way the coalition for the elections was built, describing it as "the coalition that Edi Rama would want", with Ilir Meta and Fatmir Mediu, instead of a broader opposition alliance with figures like Agron Shehaj or Adriatik Lapaj.
"The lists were made as Rama wanted them. Berisha's behavior was what benefited Rama the most. Berisha is in a difficult situation today. If he does not claim that the elections were stolen, all he has to do is resign," said the MP.
Xhaferaj predicted a reform of the Democratic Party from autumn to spring, emphasizing that there is already "clear pressure for the DP to engage in deep and sincere reform."
